What
is a Palm Pilot?
Palm Pilot is a brand name for a
certain type of handheld computer or PDA (Personal Data Assistant) like Kleenex is for tissues. When someone says
Palm they are referring to handhelds that run the Palm OS (operating system).
These include:
Palm Pilot (3com)
Visor (Handspring)
Clie (Sony)
…and a few others, these are the most common.
What
can a Palm Handheld do?
A lot. It is a minicomputer made
specifically for a handheld interface. This means, there is no keyboard* or mouse.
It has buttons and a touchscreen. You use a stylus (like a pen) to tap the
screen and handwrite letters that it will recognize.
Commonly used as an personal organizer with Datebook, Address Book, To Do List
and Memo Pad) PDA's also store databases, images & documents. There are a wide
variety of applications out there, from
a digital planetarium, to tracking menstrual cycles, to translating Chinese, most of them
are free.
* you can use an onscreen keyboard
How
Much Do Palms cost and how do I get one?
There is a whole range of Palm
handhelds from simple to fancy, used to new. The range in about $75-$400. You
can purchase new models online (Shopper.com) or at any computer, electronics or office supply store. Used
models can be found on
Ebay
or other auction sites.
I recommend starting with at least 8MB of RAM.
Do I
need a PDA with a color screen?
Color screens are nice and pretty,
but add no functionality to QiSource software.
Can I
use QiSource with a memory card?
Sure!
Jfile allows you to put
databses on your memory card, It might take a second or two longer to open each
database, but it'll save you memory space if you need it.
Is
QiSource available for Windows CE or other non-palm handhelds?
Sorry, but no. At this time
QiSource is only available for Palm OS handhelds.
Why should I buy QiSource?
If you're an Acupuncturist, Chinese Herbalist or TCM student then you
refer to a variety of books and materials in a clinical or learning
environment. Most of these are big and bulky and it can be difficult to find what you're
looking for. QiSource puts most of that information in your pocket. You can
search entire databases for TCM information. Sort it anyway you want -
alphabetical, by category, by function or type. You can even 'filter' databases
by choosing up to 5 different criteria simultaneously. The wealth of information
in QiSource far surpasses most 'handbooks' currently available.
What do I need to run QiSource?
a Palm OS handheld PDA
a computer that you can sync with the handheld
1.4mb free memory on the PDA
Version 3.0 Palm OS or higher
Jfile (the database program that reads the TCM data)
Flash! [optional] (the program that transforms QiSource into electronic flashcards)
And of course QiSource TCM Reference Suite

variable.
What are
the check boxes for?
The check boxes in the second column of all QiSource databases can be used to
select several items in order to compare & contrast or group them together for a
prescription. Simply check the boxes you want and then sort that column
(reverse). The selected items will all be grouped at the top. Great for dosing
herbs and checking the overall temperature of a custom herbal formula.
Can I add my own notes to
QiSource?
You can add to and edit all the information in QiSource, BUT...your notes &
changes will not transfer if you ever
need to reinstall or update to a newer version of QiSource.

What do QiSource Study Charts
look like?
There are 41 double-sided, full color, laminated charts. They are printed on
letter sized cardstock and laminated in clear plastic. The dimensions are 9 x 11.5
inches.
Are the charts bound like a book?
No, each chart is separate so that you can spread them
out. You can bind them yourself with ultra clear packing
tape to make 'hinges'. Binder clips can be used to hold them together for
storage or travel.
So
why is it easier to learn TCM with QiSource Study Charts?
QiSource Study Charts
are designed to organize information in a way that makes it easier
to learn. The items that have more prominent formatting (ie: Larger
Font, Bold, Italics, CAPITALS, or
colors)
represent broad or macro information. By learning these items first,
you create a frame of reference that the more detailed or micro
information can fit into. The Meridian charts present the
acupuncture points in a linear fashion; by grouping point functions it is
easier to understand their relationship and there is less to remember. Also, all
of the info is in one place, so it is easy to compare and contrast the different
patterns. These charts are also very useful as
reference material for case studies, study groups and cram sessions.
What is the dry erase marker for?
All of the charts are laminated so you can make semi-permanent notes on
them. Also included in the set is a blank grid of all of the important
acupuncture points that you can fill in to test yourself. Great for exam
preparation!
